About

           JOY COLE

I AM PRIMARILY A LANDSCAPE PAINTER CONCENTRATING ON THE LIGHT AND

ATMOSPHERE OF A SCENE. MY INITIAL INSPIRATION MAY SIMPLY COME FROM A  FLASH OF COLOUR ON A SUNLIT FIELD, OR FIGURES SILHOUETTED AGAINST A  BRIGHTLY LIT SEA.  THESE SCENES I USUALLY PAINT WITH ACRYLICS ON CANVAS.

I have never lost my love for watercolours and love the feeling when a painting in this difficult medium works, but these days I need to practice to achieve.

AFTER MONTHS OF PAINTING SEA AND MARSHES, I TURN TO HEDGEROWS AND  GARDENS,  ZOOMING IN ON COW PARSLEY,TEAZLES AND FLOWERS.

I RARELY DRAW  - I KNOW THIS BREAKS EVERY RULE BUT I PREFER TO BUILD UP THE  BONES OF A PAINTING UNTIL I'M SATISFIED THAT THIS IS HOW I WANT TO PORTRAY THE SUBJECT.

During lockdown I have been reunited with my watercolours and last week I

decided to try a daily experimental watercolour in a 10x10in. hot press

watercolour block.I may not manage everyday however, as there are several

large Acrylics demanding attention
